Business

Egerton is a small village in terms of population and has a tradition of agriculture, with about 13 farmers still living and working here. The farmers maintain the hedges around the village and without them providing this service the village would not appear half as attractive. As well as farmers, there is also a business in Egerton for liquid manure products.

A key business to villagers is the one remaining village shop which plays an important part, especially to the elderly because the village is not within easy reach of Ashford or Headcorn if you don't have your own transport. The Post Office is extensively used and the shop is well stocked with a wide range of groceries and other products. They regularly deliver grocery orders to local residents.

The garage is important too for servicing, repairs, MOTs and fuel sales. It is a good old-fashioned family business, widely used by locals and which is very helpful, particularly when it comes to a breakdown. You can always rely on them to come to your aid. There is also a car body repair shop.

The telecottage is a new venture, not a business as such, but offering huge benefits to those in business or wanting to set up to develop business knowledge through information technology. For four evenings a week there are courses on the Internet, word processing, basic IT and Excel. There are eight computers for pupils at the moment but the telecottage is so successful that funding and planning permission has been won for an extension to the telecottage room to offer places for more people to learn. There is a free computer clinic every Saturday morning where you can get help and advice with any problems with your computer or the programs. These facilities are open to the whole village (and beyond) and it is hoped it will help a lot of people in running their businesses more efficiently and being able to keep more up-to-date with things due to their new-found knowledge of the Internet, for instance.

The largest employer in Egerton as a single entity is Court Lodge, the apple packing station. They have many acres of orchards around Egerton which occupies a fair amount of their time during the course of a year, and they also pack other farms' apples for the local supermarket trade. They are always playing an active part in village life. They had a key part to play in the success of the recent apply fayre. They always lend their tractors and trailers at fetes. Buss's farm shop helps villagers enormously by having very generous opening hours each day, even through the winter and by allowing people to help themselves and putting the money in a locked chest. They have a pick-your-own service on many of their products at the height of the season. Villagers like to have fresh produce whenever possible.

The local plant hire company is almost "on call" whenever the Parish Council need jobs done for the village, like hedge cutting, ditch clearing etc. The two main builders here also support the Parish by winning parish projects (competitively) and adding "extra unforeseen items" without charge. They will also attend urgent requests from the Parish Council when something is wrong. There is a period house restorer, a heating and plumbing engineer and an upholsterer of furniture, cars and carriages.

Egerton has numerous one-man or one-woman businesses. 1 mobile hairdresser, 2 painters and decorators, 1 physiotherapist, 1 aromatherapist, a second-hand book dealer and restorer, an insurance consultant, a cake decoration specialist, a nurseryman, a computer services consultant, a livery yard and a picture framing business.

Should we have omitted your business, please contact us to include you. There is no charge for Egerton businesses.
